Once again with the most thorough book to series comparison! Thank you for sharing the research because I was too scared as a fan here more for the character development in the plot than the romance series watcher. Almost all the plot points I have been interested in seeing if the book handled better were nonexistent in the book or in the case of Daphne and the duke somehow written much worse.

The biggest problem of the adaptation was Frodo. You mentioned that he should have been older - in fact he was as old as Bilbo was, when he set off on his adventure, 50 something. And he was brave and resourceful, even when he was scared. The whole Old Forest sequence has been cut out, but it was with the Barrow wights that Frodo first showed his stuff. On Weathertop, he didn't just fall down and get stabbed, he attacked the witch king and got stabbed. Maybe not the smartest move, but certainly showed his spunk. Again at the ford of Rivendell, he defied the Nazgul, even though he was almost in their world because of his wound. I could go on, but portraying Frodo as a scared rabbit was the worst part of the movies. A few other characters were mistreated as well; as you said, Gimli was made into a caricature, and I hated what they did to Faramir. Even Denethor was not as bad in the books as he was on screen, or rather, he was a lot more complex in the books as opposed to the villain Jackson made him out to be. That's not to say the LOTR movies were bad, but these characterizations were simply off.

I found the movie a lot of fun. Captain Shakespear was a show-stealer and the ghosts of the murdered prince's were hilarious, especially their reactions to each other's murder. I loved when they find Oona and their reaction shows that they treated their sister differently than each other because she wasn't allowed to inherit the throne and therefore, wasn't a threat. She was the member of the royal family that her father and brothers allowed themselves to get attached to. Then the idea that once Septimus is killed, they're stuck with each other as ghosts. Finally, the fight between Tristan and dead and voodoo-dolled controlled Septimus's body with the cuts to the ghost's reactions, especially Septimus who is watching his own body be used is WONDERFUL.

The film has it's flaws, it's got it:s fair share of cheese in voice acting and plot, but it also excels in depth and animation beauty. I adore this movie, warts and all.

i have only read the books, as a teenager i sniped a copy from my mom's collection of one of the adjacent non-bridgerton love stories (Henry and Dunford) and loved it so much that i went back to read every single julia quinn that my mom had. i loved them all so much. i did at the time notice the issue you mentioned of every conflict between main characters being easily solved by communication. They all follow a similar formula too. Protags meet, have rising tension between them, eventually recognize their feelings for one another, have a communication-related issue that nearly drives them apart, and then reconcile only to (in most cases) have a late-stage conflict that nearly ruins everything again, sometimes putting one or both in actual danger. i was so excited to hear that they were being adapted, but i haven't watched the show yet as i don't have a netflix subscription, and had decided to wait until more of the series was released to actually get one to binge the show. lately i've considered re-reading them before watching so i can do my own "what was changed" casual analysis to annoy my wife when i make her watch them with me. my main complaint is that there was never a sapphic love story. i genuinely expected Eloise to be gay at the beginning of her book and was a little disappointed that she just became a stepmom but the story was still good.

I Think the movie's new additions are still good as their stand alones. And the animation is amazing a reimagining of another plot isn't always inherently bad but always does undercut the original But with enough time and effort it would be able to blend into a more closely book accurate mildly tweaked; re-telling Infact if they adapted this into a Netflix series ,with unlimited time and resources . Each episode or season focused on one subject with the same high grade visual quality(and some designing tweaks) Theoretically they could make one of the best bird animated series ever With fresh ideas that won't interrupt or fuck up the core material and leaving room for more expansive details and adventures in this owl world I want to see more bird movies that are as beautifully animated at this regardless of how good the content is ngl lmao

Does anyone else feel that it is kind of telling that the film's version of Greg (played by James Franco's IRL younger brother Dave) is written like a super-supportive and enthusiastic younger brother who is just happy to be included in Tommy's "Masterpiece" and is almost constantly in awe of Tommy? It seems especially... deliberate given that Dave Franco had always avoided working with James before now (something that allegedly really frustrated James). Almost seems that James was trying to use this film to make Dave act like the little brother James wanted him to be.

I really like the 1997 version with Charles Dance as deWinter, Emilia Fox as Mrs. deWinter, Diana Rigg as Mrs. Danvers and Faye Dunaway as Mrs. Van Hopper. Emilia Fox does a really good job playing the young bride suddenly becoming the mistress of a large estate she doesn't know how to run. She comes across as naive and out of her depth without being super annoying (I love the Orson Welles, Joan Fontaine "Jane Eyre", but I can't watch this version of "Rebecca" because of how annoying I find her). Honestly, this version is a lot like "Jane Eyre". Charles Dance's version of Maxim deWinter resembles Orson Welles' Edward Rochester. He's gruff to the point of being rude at times, but is also just kind enough to get the innocent young woman in a service position to fall for him. He's brooding and has a huge secret relating to his first wife that could ruin everything. A madwoman sets his house on fire, he's seriously injured in a failed attempt to save her, then ends up living happily ever after with his young bride. I don't know how accurate it is in relation to the book though because I haven't read it.

It wouldn't be unusual for the upper classes of a colonized state to be a bit indifferent to the plight of their people. After all, theres always someone locally benefiting from such things.
